|The privately-held company, was founded in 1970 as a joint venture between three long-established printing companies: Brepols, Van Genechten and Biermans: since the early 19th century, Turnhout has been a centre of playing card making. Various graphics companies specialised in the production of playing cards. In 1970, the above mentioned companies joined forces. Their experience and know-how were combined in one joint-venture, with the name of Cartamundi.
The company also maintains manufacturing facilities in Canvey Island (UK), Altenburg (Germany), [Poland] and Dallas (Texas, USA). In 2005 Cartamundi acquired Copag, in 2006 Cartamundi acquired Robert Yaquinto printing company. Cartamundi produced the cards and chips used in the James Bond movie Casino Royale.
In the early-to-mid 1990s, Cartamundi was a leading printer of collectible card games for other companies. Early editions of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering and Decipher, Inc.'s Star Trek Customizable Card Game and Star Wars Customizable Card Game, as well as several other games, were printed by the company.|
